The ReadUp Program

What is ReadUp?

ReadUp is a library loyalty scheme for library members aged 8 and under.  Every six library visits earns them one of five unique certificates created by award winning Queensland children’s book illustrators,  including Narelle Oliver and Gregory Rogers.

ReadUp aims to encourage library membership for children; to encourage regular library use by children and families; and to promote reading and literacy.

Below, you’ll find guidelines and resources for implementing a ReadUp program at your library. ReadUp can be run all year or for a set period of time and is easy to roll out.

ReadUp was developed by Moreton Bay Region Libraries, and has been made available to public and school libraries through a partnership with BookLinks.

How does ReadUp work?

Library visit + borrowing books = ReadUp Stamp. 6 ReadUp Stamps = Certificate!

On joining, children get a ReadUp card that is stamped every time they visit the library and borrow a book.  After 6 stamps, they’ve earned a certificate of their choice and a new ReadUp card to start again.  There are five certificates to collect.

There are also some ReadUp FAQs available at http://www.moretonbay.qld.gov.au/readup/

  1. Love the sound of this initiative. Have forwarded the idea to our local school. How does one get local state librabies involved though? I can not find it listed at our local library and would like to avail to them the info.

    • Public libraries in Queensland were advised on the availablity of the ReadUp resource on Tuesday via email listservs and I also attended a Young People’s Librarians Group meeting at the State Library yesterday to promote the program to public libraries. As the resource has only become available this week it may take a bit of time for libraries to pick it up and implement it within their community. We are hoping that people will spread the word via their networks and word of mouth. Most public library services have a Contact Us option on their web pages through which you could alert them to the program.

thanks for your interest and support, Anne

  2. Thanks Anne,
I will keep an eye and ear out for more at my public library and check with them for updates.
I believe our school library is interested and possibly register soon. Very exciting. Dimity.

  3. Such a fantastic program, and the certificates the kids can earn are just gorgeous. I have shared this post with my facebook fans.

  4. My daughters and I just happened to be at our local library the day they launched the ReadUp program. The girls love visiting the library and collecting the stamps. They are very excited as they are over half way to receiving their first certificate. I will share this post on my blog page so my friends’ children can join in too.

    • Thanks very much Rachel for your comment. I’m glad the girls are so excited by ReadUp. I hope they don’t have too much trouble choosing which certificate to get first – decisions, decisions!
